Since 1990, thousands of the nearly 1.25 million practicing physicians in the United States have been under investigation or subject to disciplinary proceedings. At least that’s what a recent report by Consumer Reports magazine published under the alarming title “What You Don’t Know About Your Doctor Could Hurt You” says. According to the investigation, the accusations against these doctors range from working under the influence of alcohol or drugs to sexual misconduct or even suspicion of fatal negligence. Many of those doctors continue to practice while the medical board of the state where they practice investigates the case.

The first step is to look for the list of doctors who accept your health insurance, and then the recommendation of other patients, family members, or other doctors is important. How the family member and friend did with that doctor, how he treated him are questions that must always be asked. It should also be borne in mind that patients sometimes think of the doctor because of his treatment and not because of the knowledge or experience of that doctor. Therefore, a patient should combine the opinion that others have about a doctor with his professional background. It is very important that the doctor and the patient speak the same language. On the other hand, that it is not a medicine for going to socialize. It is common to see medical practices turned into social events, especially when it comes to caring for the elderly. There are clinics where they offer snacks, hairdressing services, where they resolve immigration procedures. Medical quality should come first, then cupcakes.

Doctors undoubtedly have an advantage because, being in the medical community, we know who is who. However, the fundamental thing is to go with someone who knows how to specifically attend to the type of condition you are suffering from and does not necessarily have to be a specialist with 30 years of experience. Patients should not fear visiting a young doctor, as many novices are more aware of medical advances and new techniques than some more experienced doctors. It does not have to be from your country, or woman or man, but it does speak your language. You’re not going to choose him just for being nice, either, but at least make sure he shows compassion and that he cares what you’re feeling. To find a specialist, it is best to ask another doctor (it could be your family doctor) and definitely never be guided by the comments (reviews ) that you find on the internet because anyone writes there.

If I had to say how many people ask me if I am certified, the answer to that question is zero, and I consider that the first thing a patient should know is if a surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Then you should ask about everything you have doubts about; there are no dumb questions. Now there are many cosmetic surgeons, but cosmetic surgery is not the same as plastic surgery.
